30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 26

Who is your favorite anime villain?

What really makes a villain? When I first started thinking about this challenge, I found myself all over the place in my selection. What truly makes a villain lovable and stand out among his peers through all the various mediums of entertainment and media but with anime at the forefront? I wanted someone who could stand beside any villain and not care about their deeds and accomplishments because in their heart of hearts, they knew that nothing would prevent them from achieving their goal… even if they failed several times to get there.

I imagined them all being in a room together. Powerhouses like Griffith from Berserk who has committed one of the most heinous act that I have witnessed on screen and would have been my favorite if I could find a way to stomach what this man did but I can’t (don’t worry, I will not spoil and ruin that moment if you haven’t seen it yet.) to characters like Shogo Makishima from Psycho-Pass who gave one of the most memorable monologues to Akane while standing above her, committing crimes that no one could stop until the very end of the series.

Kumagawa was terrifying.

Then there are staples like Frieza, Madara Uchiha, and King Bradley to lesser known but equally just as sinister villains like Misogi Kumagawa from Medaka Box who in my humble opinion had one of the greatest introductions ever in anime with him flat out removing the color from the show to torture and murder someone. I can’t tell you how shocked I was or how moist my pants became.

But I digess.

I have waited for this moment for a long time…

The one would stood out the most as my favorite was oddly the one who taken the greatest of beat downs and never flinched. (At least not after the first one.) Seto Kaiba not only took over his father’s company, created a better experience at playing Duel Monsters, fought against people who had magical powers that he did not believe and won against them (albeit never being Yami Yugi or Maximilian Pegasus because of their respective Millennium Items), destroyed lives to obtain the only four Blue Eyes White Dragons, but this man TRAVELED BACK IN TIME just to give Atem the lose that he deserved because Seto Kaiba knew that he was a better duelist.

And did this all while maintain the same smug ass attitude throughout the entire series without breaking a sweat. Now you may say that Seto was a anti-hero because he did end up helping the team out from time to time and in later seasons, he wasn’t really the big bad anymore but I am here to argue and tell you that no villain in that series wanted to deal with Kaiba. (Except for Pegasus but that only because he could read minds.) No one.

Who would? The man could simply create cards! I’m sure he bought the rights to Duel Monsters. This main held an entire city wide tournament just to beat ONE person. The world was about the end and Seto didn’t care, he just wanted to duel Yugi. No fancy magic. No items of destruction. Just a children’s card game and unbelievable and iron forged sense of payback for losing.

Did I fail to mention that he created a device to allowed him to travel to the AFTERLIFE. Not back in time. He bought a ticket to the afterlife just to prove that he was better person at a children’s card game. Damn all of his other achievements in life.

There is NO character (outside of Griffith but we aren’t talking about him.) that has that much drive and determination. None. Put up or shut up.

And just to add insult to injury, he had some of the best comeback in all of anime. No one could talk smack like Seto and back it up. And he probably dressed better than your villain too.

All right, that is all to see here. As always, thank you for stopping by and reading my blog. You have no idea what it means to me and I cannot express my gratitude enough. Who is your favorite villain and why? What makes him your favorite? Let’s talk about it in the comments below!

Until the next post…

Kaiba is definitely one of my favourite anime characters of all time. In the manga, he (and his brother) were definitely evil bastards. They were so compelling and ambitious though, it was hard not to like them.
And yeah, Kaiba is pretty dapper lol. Hosting a duel tournament in an entire city and making technology to go to the afterlife just to beat one person definitely aren’t no small feats. Great post!

    1. Man! Talk about dedication! He knew Atem was cheating and HAD to prove that without that ability, he would lose and I believe it. Kaiba was literally existing around all types of magical mcguffins and was like “Nope… Don’t believe it. You still lose to me.” And took his loses in stride. Never calling him a cheater. Kaiba was the best. I need to read the manga.

      Glad you enjoyed the post!
