When you think about it, it was truly amazing just how much you learn and absorb from the things that you consume everyday… consciously and unconsciously. I was just speaking with a really close friend this morning, a person that I consider a brother though we have only met twice in person and we were discussing how video games has subtly given us the tools to succeed in life if we were to apply the things we learn and the things we are willing to do to our everyday struggle. We are so willing to poor hours into the game to acquire this super cool weapon or armor, gain notoriety or status with our ranks in the competitive space, or continue with the tedious task to one hundred percent a game. But when it comes to doing these things in life, we tend to make excuses as to why it can’t be done. I think you have found another topic… but I caution you to not digress here.
Right… my apologies.
But when I apply this way of thinking to anime, I can’t help but smile because of all the lessons that I learned from the trials and tribulations of the characters that I adore. The ideologies and perspectives that I was able to peer through the eyes of characters that I idolized and admired. I mention it before in one of writing prompts, the way where I answered the question “What is Strength”, that you don’t really understand just how hard it is to be a hero until you are faced with a situation where demands action.
And dealing with the consequences of the choice you made. Even if that choice was doing nothing at all.
Whether you answer the call or not, it doesn’t make you less than a person and that was a hard pill to swallow for me. An extremely hard lesson to acknowledge and grasp. Most people, if given the opportunity to choose between to face a hideous or terrifying truth, or to conveniently avoid it, will choose the convenience and peace. They will ignore it. They will bury it and act like it doesn’t exist. The pressures of stress can bend and twist the mind in ways I had never imagined and the outcomes can vary across the spectrum. These paths have nothing to do with right or wrong, good and evil, or strong or weak. It just makes them people. It makes them human.
It’s in our very nature. There’s plenty to distract us from the nastier truths of our lives and ourselves if we want to avoid them. A lot of us do that. And believe me, I get it. In life, we will all come across situations and problems that you won’t understand or seems insurmountable in scale and that can be scary as hell. The odds can seem against you or the consequences could seem too grave.
But experience and knowledge is the best remedy to that. Someone said that these two things counters fear and I can’t but to agree.
We fear hurt. We fear pain. Pain is usually not the thing that people sign up for when standing in line at the emotional cafeteria but after spending part of my life seemingly trying to avoid pain, I have learn to the testaments of others that it is vastly unique to life. Pain… whether physical, emotional, or otherwise is darkness in a room that is casted by all of our desires, everything we could want and hope for that oddly enough, gives birth to our strength. Because of tha pain, we learn to be better, stronger, greater than what we were yesterday. Pain is reminder that we’ve messed up or poorly handled something – it is our always present parent that warns us of our shortcomings while always pushing us to overcome them.
Wisdom is gained through experience and you don’t get any of that by not doing.
Sometimes life just sucks. There is no way around it. And it’s painful. Like not being there for someone when they needed you or coming to grips with fact that you made a choice that hurt someone. There is no way to avoid it. You have to face the suck… yeah, I said it that way. You have to acknowledge the pain or you will never get enjoy the other things. Things like love and laughter and happiness. Pain will always be there but it was pass. It fades with time, ebbing and flowing.
You just have to decide if the things like love and happiness is worth fighting for.
And if they are, you’ll get up and face those fears.
