What is really amusing about my choice for the best soundtrack is that I couldn’t stand the show when it debuted on Toonami. I tried to watch it but it was something about my mindset back then that couldn’t get into the show. A few years later, after I had matured a little bit, I revisited the show only to fall in love with it. But the one thing about this show that stood out the most to me, was the soundtrack. To this day, there are several songs that I listen to when I am happy or going through a rough stop. Mind you, I watched the show nearly 15 years ago. Talk about leaving a lasting impression. My pick for the best soundtrack is Big O.
In my opinion, a great soundtrack should be able to stand on its own without having its media attached to it. There many soundtracks that do that, but I feel like Big O does it the best.
As a huge fan of classical music, this anime already had something going for it. With the general theme of the series paying homage to Film Noir, the music has to be a reflection of that and Toshikiko Sahashi nailed it. I read somewhere that he was chosen for this project because of his vast knowledge of old-school TV dramas here in the west. Sahahi used inspirations from film noir, spy films, and shows like the Twilight Zone to the creator the score.
And my god the original score is an awesome roller coaster of soothing jazzy pieces, beautiful piano performances, and high octane spectacles!
Those are just some of the standouts to me. The entire soundtrack is filled with memorable music that can be listed to all the time outside of the anime if you favor the genre of jazz. Tears is a magnificent rendition of Sleep My Dear performed on the harmonica. Eternal Life is yet another song that should have been longer! Servant brings the funk in a lively way. And Holy is that high octane spectacle that makes you want to give it your all in the face of strife.
Also, I am only referring to the first original soundtrack. I don’t know what they were thinking with season two but they step away from what made the show so magical in season 2 in theme, tone, and musically.
Thanks for stopping by and reading. I really appreciate it! You guys and gals are awesome.
Until the next post…
Forgive me for the oddity of his post. The new editor has been resisting my attempts to tame it and been showing its ass and I can’t figure out how to fix it. I promise to update this when I figure it out but as for now, I left with this.
