~ Scene Setting ~
Setting the scene: you’ve just woken up in the hospital. You don’t remember who you are or why you are there. The hospital is completely empty… You dress and head outside into the unknown. You must make some life or death decisions now.
You need a partner for the apparent apocalypse that has taken place during your coma. Which video game character do you choose?
“I don’t think you should be walking about,” I imagined the nurse saying with a worried expression. “You should get back in bed,” she murmured after used the set of clothes that were conveniently left on the chair by the bed. Oddly enough, they fit pretty well. I had spent hours looking out into the apocalyptic landscape, probing my own brain for memories that were there. Nothing. I couldn’t remember who I was. How I got here? And without that information, I had no idea what do to next. Determined not to just sit in once place, I roamed the hospital to find no signs of life. It appeared at one point to be occupied but now it was abandoned. After wandering about and collecting various things that I thought might be useful, I found the main entrance and stepped outside on to hear voice call out.
“Awaiting your orders,” the voice came from a slender woman with her eyes colored in a black slash. She approached with sword in hand, her dress rippling with the passing breeze. Her voice was solemn, nearly devoid of emotion but at the time. I, scared out of my mind instantly back away from her with my hands raising to my defense though I knew deep down they would have served no purpose.
“Wait… orders? Who are you? Why are you? And what are you?” I asked back now pressed against a rusted care.
” I am 2B, a YorHA unit with battle capabilities that tasked with assisting you in your mission. I am here because I lost contact with you months ago and only just recently discovered your location. I am all purposed battle android.” The fact that I couldn’t see her eyes really rubbed me the wrong way. Nevertheless, I noticed that she said mission and that we knew each other in some capacity. I wanted to ask more but…
Great monsters are now roaming the lands you used to call home… what fearsome video game creatures do you see on the horizon?
The thunderous roar from a feral beast interrupted our conversation. The sheer magnitude of the sound made us both crouch into cover. It was close. Extremely close. Moments passed before the sound of flapping wings could be heard approaching. The earth underneath us began to tremble and I was unsure whether that was pure fear or the result of something else. 2B grabbed my hand and without a word, rushed back into the hospital as I saw rather large … were those dinosaurs? It wasn’t long before that stampede of seemingly fleeing animals passed. But just as I was getting ready to step back out, 2B yanked on my arm as flames scorched the street outside. The windows shattered and the intense heat made it hard to breathe. Something landed with a loud thud and when I peaked up over the charred receptionist counter, I saw what could only be a wyvern with black and red scales.
You must pick a weapon to defend yourself with. What video game weapon do you choose?
I felt a gust of wind pass from behind me as a blur dashed towards the wyvern and leaped into the air. It was only then that I realized that it was 2B with sword drawn. The blade clashed against the scales of the wyvern’s face and the impact from the blow show the creatures head into the ground… hard. Landing, she turned to apparently look at me though I couldn’t really tell from the sash over her eyes and made an expression that I only noticed because of the way she pursed her lips. “You can assist if you are-” Her words were cut short as the wyvern’s head jerked towards her. 2B barely had time to react, raising her sword in defense before getting launched into the air.
I reacted without thinking. My body moved on it’s own. Lunging over the counter, I extended out my right hand as if I was waiting from something to appear. Several heartbeats later, just as gained the wyvern’s attention, a spear materialized and my fingers wrapped around its familiar weight. Enraged by the challenge, the wyvern opened it’s mouth and I could see the embers in his throat grow. Still on auto pilot, I threw the spear behind the beast and felt my body become weightless as I lurched forward in an ethereal form.
The flames crashed into the hospital but the wyvern had missed its target. Seconds later, I found myself clutching the spear again but was several feet into the air above the beast, the momentum from the throw finally subsiding, leaving for a few moments lingering in the air. It took everything I had not to throw up at this moment. How was this happening? When did I learn how to do this? And more importantly, what am I going to do now? I knew a fall from this height was certain death and I could feel gravity’s embrace as started to descend. The wyvern roared in satisfaction. I swallowed hard and tightly gripped the spear. If it this idea worked, I would be saving my life. Falling, I launched the spear at the top of the wyvern’s head and like before, I felt my body take the path of the weapon with me zipping as a ribbon of light.
The spear struck true, piercing the scales though I couldn’t tell how deep it was able to go. My body manifested moments after in a crouched position as I imagined. The creature cried in pain, head jerking backwards and sending reeling away. Before I could have my lovely date with pavement however, I felt equally hard figure painfully embrace me before slamming into a building.
You and your partner are seeking shelter for the night after a long day of fighting. What video game house/apartment/place do you bunker down in for the night?
When I came to, I found myself in a bed. Stirring, I was tried to sit up only to be met with a sharp pain in my back and arms. I managed however and when I tried to stand, a similar pain ensued. It was tolerable however, so I ventured to the outdoor terrace where I found 2B. She stood to offer me assistance but waved her away. I wasn’t about to look weak in front of such a beautiful woman who eyes I STILL CAN’T SEE!
“You’re all right?” She asked, her usual monotone voice cracking with a hint of worry. I nodded, taking a seat on a stone bench and letting my toes wiggle in the small pond. When I asked where this place was, she explained that it was Astoria. She did not understand all of the details, but the people here hunt the monsters that we fought three days ago and use the materials to craft weapons, armor, and other useful items. She had earn this lovely abode by aiding them in killing several high targets for them during the months I was gone and had become a rather established hunter.
“I am sorry. If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt…” I point at the gash on her thigh that revealed a sample of her android material.
She shook her head and offered a slight smile. “It is all right. I shouldn’t have expected much from you. Although, you did do rather well. How did you do that?” The memories of me teleporting around a wyvern rushed my head and made me dizzy. I shook the feeling, stroking my temple. “I don’t know and I rather not think about it at the moment.”
Understanding, she nodded. “Would you like something to eat? Humans need nourishment to maintain their strength and you haven’t eaten anything since you have awoken.” She was definitely right about that. I nodded and when she offered to help me this time, I accepted it.
You’re getting awfully hungry battling those scary creatures. What video game food is in your pack?
Inside, somehow there was feast laid out before me. When the tables, the chairs, and the food got there is a complete mystery to me. I did not hear anything while we just feet away from the main room. However, I did managed to catch glimpse of a cat closing the door behind him. The cat was on two legs and looked to be maintain the posture very well for an animal that I was used to seeing only on four legs.
I wasted no time. Sitting at the table, I devoured everything I could with reckless abandonment. I did not know how long this treatment would last and I was going to make sure that well fed to prepare for anything else that might be throw my way.
You and your partner run across more survivors who ask to join your party, but one of them is a little shady. Which video game character is the wolf in sheep’s clothing?
After eating, 2B informs me that we need to explore more of the area. It was her duty as a hunter here even if it was a guise to locate me. I agreed. There was so much that I didn’t understand. However, before we left the main gates of Astoria, we were stopped by a hand of hunters while 2B bought and gathered supplies for our journey. They informed us that there was a rumor going around that one of the ancient cities that existed before Terrae Shift still stands north of Astoria in the uncharted region. They were headed there to investigate and looking for eager hunters to accompany them. Though 2B insisted that we go alone, I convinced her that it might be better to travel them. 2B reluctantly agreed, pointing out someone that she was very suspicious about thought I couldn’t see the reason why. Though I had to admit, it did look VERY out of place with his red bandana
You hear of a place that’s been untouched by the apocalypse. What video game world do you hope it is?
As we traveled, I couldn’t help but wonder what this place would be like. But deep down, I think I already knew. But you know what is more important… how do I get that sash off…
And there you have it. Once again, I really enjoy coming up with unique ways to answer these questions. I loved this almost as much as I loved the previous one I did. You can check that one out here if you interested in reading that one.
As for the nominations, I call upon the following to heed the call!
Moyatori – An awesome person that I just met who is currently doing gathering thoughts about one of my favorite anime, Toradora!
Timlah – Who just recently reminded me about Wallace and Gromit’s Christmas Special. Now I have the urge to watch that now.
Mallow – Man… I think E3 as we know it might be done unless the developers and studios don’t step up to to carry the torch but they run across the same problem the big three does.
Chris Voyage – That list on the top openings and endings was a pretty noice list. I got some that I would move around, but solid list. (lol)
Heather Blair – Will probably be a bit busy for this but here is to hoping she makes the time. She is rather awesome! Stuff Crust Pizzas are amazing by the way.
Danger Boy – Hazelnut Bastille sounds like an amazing game! Not really much of a PC gamer myself, been playing on consoles for far too long but honestly, I might torture my fingers to play that. Thanks for the share!
And lastly, anyone who see this and want to be apart of it. Join in on the fun!
