With the coming of Fall being us a new season of Anime to dive into and I after heavy consideration of how I was going to try to tackle this season to give a constant flow of content, I have decided to pick up at least three anime to watch and give episodic thoughts on. This is going to quite the challenge but it’s something I’ve decided to pick up after reading through a couple of my acquaintances here on WordPress. Shout out to Karandi, Shokamoka, and Arria for the inspiration to even attempt such a daring feat.
But without further ado, here are my thoughts on the anime coming to us in the fall and the shows I will be picking up.
Two Car – The Personal Pick
So… if you couldn’t tell from my Grid 2 Game review from way back when I am a racing enthusiast. (You probably couldn’t.) I love racing games and things that have to do with going fast. Redline is on my top ten best-animated movies of all time. So when I heard that there was a show about two girls battling in motorcycle sidecars, I signed without question. As a bonus, Silver Link is handling the production here and they have produced some well-received shows in Fate/kaleid Liner Prisma Illya, Watamote’s OVA, and one of my favorite shows Baka to Test. I couldn’t find much on the show so this will be my blink pick. (I think each season, I will have one of these.)
Kekkai Sensen & Beyond (Season 2) – Ongoing Pick
Would you believe me if I told you I still have not seen the final episode of the first season? I have a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why I haven’t seen yet but I do promise to see it before I pick up October 8th. Just know that I fell in love with this show before I even watched the first episode and by episode three, I was completely hooked. The style by Studio Bones was awe-inspiring! (I am following anything done by the creator of Trigun as that is one of my all-time favorite anime). The music the incorporated in the soundtrack was bliss and the surprisingly so, I really REALLY enjoy the dub. Like I only watch this show dubbed.
Bonus fact: The ending for this anime is one of best feel-good songs I have ever heard. Sugar Song to Bitter Step. But that is a post for another time. (Soon hopefully.) Expect this one.
So… I’m going to be completely honest about this one. I have no idea what this is about. So… here is the synopsis provided by MAL!
On May 1, 1945 in Berlin, as the Red Army raises the Soviet flag over the Reichskanzlei, a group of Nazi officers conducts a ritual. For them, the slaughter in the city is nothing but the perfect ritual sacrifice in order to bring back the Order of the 13 Lances, a group of supermen whose coming would bring the world’s destruction. Years later, no one knows if this group of officers succeeded, or whether they lived or died. Few know of their existence, and even those who knew began to pass away as the decades passed.
Now in December in the present day in Suwahara City, Ren Fujii spends his days at the hospital. It has been two months since the incident that brought him to the hospital: a fight with his friend Shirou Yusa where they almost tried to kill each other. He tries to value what he has left to him, but every night he sees the same dream: a guillotine, murderers who hunt people, and the black-clothed knights who pursue the murderers. He is desperate to return to his normal, everyday life, but even now he hears Shirou’s words: “Everyone who remains in this city eventually loses their minds.”
The premise is intriguing enough for me to watch the first couple of episodes. The trailer has cool looking effects and the animation seems all right. This show gives me the Akame Ga Kill vibe and that was a series that tried randomly and really enjoyed.
Make way, the show with the potential to ascend to the vacant throne of Shonen greatness left by Naruto and Bleach has arrived. With the torch already being passed to My Hero Academia, the anime scene is looking for the next best thing to climb the ranks. Now, I have a few friends that tell me that the manga is awesome and because I don’t do a lot of reading, I was recommended to at least watch the show. From what I heard, I am getting Toaru Majutsu No index vibe and that is a good sign because I adored that show. (Where is season 3! We need SEASON 3!!!)
Studio Pierrot is the production company making the series and that is also a good sign. They have had their hand in some of the most popular series of the last decade? They have worked on Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, and even Mezza DSA (Shout out to those that know that last one.) I think it is safe to assume that this will be a long-lasting one with the manga still going strong.
The trailer was pretty awesome though I am not a fan of the song. (It will probably grow on me.) I am watching this one.
Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho-bitch na Ken
Translated Title: My Girlfriend is a Faithful Virgin Bitch. I can’t help but curious about this one. I’m not expecting much, but it won’t hurt to see if the comedy in eechi show proves to be funny. And the poster for this one is truly one of a kind.
Houseki no Kuni
Style. I am digging this animation and art style. It’s unique and different and that alone warrants to listen. Usually, I find this 3D style to be a bit jarring but here, I find it interesting. And did you see these girls breaking apart like glass!? What is going on here? Here is the synopsis.
In the distant future, a new immortal and genderless life form called Gems populate the Earth. The 28 Gems must fight against the Moon Dwellers, who attack them regularly to abduct them and to turn them into decorations. Each Gem is assigned a role, such as a fighter or a medic.
Being only 300 years old, Phosphophyllite is the youngest of the Gems and has no assignment yet. He wants to help to fight the Moon Dwellers but is too weak and brittle for battle. One day the master of Gems, Kongou (Adamantine), assigns him the task of creating a natural history encyclopedia.
This is my wild card. Studio Orange was also behind a pretty decent show called Black Bullet which featured a bit of this animation style in sections. The lore and world are looks so fascinating. The music in the trailer is beautiful as well. I can’t wait to talk about this one when it airs on October 7!
Imouto sae Ireba Ii.
So don’t judge me… I have soft spot for animes that focuses on the creation of manga and anime. I have a bunch of anime I need to get around to on these topics but I am throwing this one in because it kinda reminds me of Eromanga. (I am so behind on anime. I have to watch that too!)
This is the story of the daily life of a young siscon novelist, Itsuki Hashima with his perfect little sister Chihiro, the genius illustrator Nayuta Kani, his best friend Miyako Shirakawa and some insane partners from his publishers.
Bonus: Though I don’t read manga often, I did read Koimoku and I really wish they would make an anime out of that. Until then, I have this! (and eromanga!)
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
I will probably be watching this one for the feels. This one comes from one of my favorite studios, White Fox. They are behind shows like Steins;Gate, The Devil is a Part-Timer, Katanagatari, and Akame ga Kill. All of those mentioned shows cannot be denied their animation beauty and sound quality. I loved all the shows done by them so I’m sure I will find something I like here. Here is the scoop!
Civilization is dead, but Chito and Yuuri are still alive. So they hop aboard their beloved Kettenkrad motorbike and aimlessly wander the ruins of the world they once knew. Day after hopeless day, they look for their next meal and fuel for their ride. But as long as the two are together, even an existence as bleak as theirs has a day or two of sunshine in it, whether they’re sucking down their fill of soup or hunting for machine parts to tinker with. For two girls in a world full of nothing, the experiences, and feelings the two share give them something to live for…
I love personal shows like this that focuses on the interaction and character development between two characters. Flip Flappers was a show that did this well in my opinion and I get the idea this one is going for the same tone.
This is only a select few that have caught my interest but I won’t go over every single anime coming out this fall. Shout out to Just Because!, Net-Juu No Susume, Code: Realize, and Vanishing Line. Consider those my honorable mentions.
These are the few I will keep my eye on this season. What are some of yours? I might pick up one of yours so that we can watch it together. Did the ones from last year live up to the hype? I’d love to hear and talk about it.
Note: I left off movies because we probably won’t get to watch for awhile so no point in mentioning them. The Heavenly Feel movie in the Fate series and Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution movies that I am really hoping get a US funimation release.
Next Saturday is the starting line! Are you ready!? ^_^
